The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding,

Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn't competed as a bodybuilder since he won the Mr. Olympia title in 1980, but he remains the sport's No. 1 icon. He hosts an annual bodybuilding contest in Columbus, Ohio, and allows a column to be ghost-written under his name in a muscle magazine. Today's bodybuilders may have bigger muscles than Arnold ever did, but everyone inside and outside the iron game gives him credit for exponentially broadening the popularity of physique training. With this updated Encyclopedia (it was originally published in 1985), Schwarzenegger wraps his huge arms around the entire sport. He hits the history of bodybuilding, the champions (he's quite generous in his praise of predecessors, contemporaries, and successors alike), the training systems. Some of the information is more bodybuilding lore than science; for example, exercises are said to "expand the rib cage" or develop the "inner" or "outer" chest, all physiological impossibilities. But they're still good exercises, and the book includes every movement imaginable for every muscle group. If you love the sport of bodybuilding, you'll want this book in your library, if for no other reason than to feast your eyes on the hundreds of photos of the best physiques in the history of the sport. And, in a pinch, the 800-page encyclopedia can fill in nicely for a missing dumbbell. --Lou Schuler

Encyclopedia of Country Living, 10th Edition

The Encyclopedia of Country Living No home, whether in the country, the city, or somewhere in between, should be without this one-of-a-kind encyclopedia. For more than 30 years, people have relied on Carla Emery's practical, step-by-step advice on basic self-sufficiency skills such as how to cultivate a garden, buy land, bake bread, raise farm animals, make sausage, milk a goat, grow herbs, churn butter, build a chicken coop, cook on a wood stove, and much, much more. This updated 10th edition includes expanded and updated mail-order information, including e-mail addresses and Web sites, while adding more of Emery's personal advice, reflections, and anecdotes to ensure that this incredibly detailed, diverse book is as enjoyable as it is useful. Reviews "The updated ninth edition of this compendium of food production information is the hefty result of over three decades of intelligence-gathering by Emery, whose initial encyclopedia project was designed to help newbies in the "back to the land" movement of the early 70s learn self-sufficiency. Tasks Emery covers run the gamut from the simple to the complex, and from the common to the strange, and include how to: bake bread, make seed milk, sew a cornhusk bed, dry flowers, prune kiwi vines, culture yogurt, plant beans, keep bees, build a fish pond, artificially inseminate a turkey and help a cow who's eaten nails. In chapters such as "Grasses, Grains & Canes," "Food Preservation" and "Goats, Cows & Home Dairying," Emery offers advice, recipes (including many that are vegan), folk wisdom and plenty of hard facts. Though it's definitely not aimed at them, urbanites will find the recipes and resources lists (of herb periodicals, nurseries, organizations dedicated to simple living, etc.) useful, the trivia interesting ("catsup" was originally a thick sauce made from any fruit or vegetable), and Emery's personal reflectio

Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE)

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia is an exhaustive classic Biblical encyclopedia consisting of 5 paper volumes. This bastion of knowledge is now available in one beautifully formatted book for the Kindle. The Kindle edition works as any other Kindle dictionary and may be set as the Kindle default dictionary. The ISBE includes almost 10,000 thoroughly written authoritative articles representing the scholarship of nearly 200 evangelical scholars. In harmony with the practical and authoritative character of the Encyclopedia the greatest pains were taken by the authors to secure comprehensiveness and completeness in its presentation of all Biblical matters, and in its fullness of typical Scriptural references on all subjects dealt with. In scope the work embraces the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha, together with all related subjects of Language, Text, Literature (apocalyptic, apocryphal, sub-apostolic, etc.), Archeology, historical and religious environment-whatever, in short, may throw light on the meaning and message of the sacred Book. The aim was that nothing great or small conducing to this end was to be omitted. History of peoples and religions, Ethnology, Geography, Topography, Biography, Arts and Crafts, Manners and Customs, Family Life, Natural History, Agriculture, War, Shipping, Ritual, Laws, Sects, Music, and all else pertaining to the outer and inner life of the people of the Bible, and therefore throwing light upon the meaning of the original writers, are amply and minutely treated. Proper names are explained and their occurrences in the Bible and Apocrypha noted. Large space was devoted to the meanings and uses of the more ordinary, as well as of rarer and obsolete, English words with special reference to their Hebrew and Greek originals and to the variations of usage in the King James/Authorized Version and the Revised Versions. Careful attention was given to the figurative uses of words in connection with all subjects where such uses occur. The Kindle edition incorporates a cross-reference system between the articles and the included King James Bible, which makes it easy to navigate a huge amount of scholarly information and read the Scripture. No maps or illustrations are included in this Kindle edition. Also note that Kindle Fire does not support the dictionary format. The ISBE is a required reference book for the Kindle library of any serious student of the Bible. For other publications by OSNOVA, please visit the OSNOVA Press website at http://osnovapress.wordpress.com/If you have any questions or concerns at all about this (or any other of my publications), please email us at osnova@gmail.com
